Pensieve Memory: 03.15.09 Placebo Effect
{The placebo effect is a phenomenon in medicine where the results of a medical treatment are affected by their symbolism, and not just their medical value.}
I was watching the show "big bang theory". They referred to a situation where one of the friends were under a placebo effect. His friend said he can't talk to girls unless he had alcohol. this gives the assumption that courage is only made with alcohol. he drinks something and was able to talk to a girl in five minutes after the drink. the other guys realized that he was drinking "oDoul's" which was a non-alcoholic beer. once they told him he was drinking non alcoholic beverage, he froze up.
the placebo effect is all about the mind believing in something works and making you believe that's going to do it. It's basically fake courage. i think some people need that to drive themselves. i'm partially in that situation with a product i'm using hoping that it will work eventually. I've never been the type to typically believe in stuff like that such as Gatorade helping your play more and things like that.
it works when people just believe in something so totally far-fetched and then it helps them. its a false god to get them through the day. well if it makes you happy, go ahead. just don't go killing yourself for that.
i remember watching the movie matchstick men, featuring nicholas cage. his character needed this pill to stop his panic attacks. later in the movie, his psychiatrist was actually giving him a women's birth control pill. it did nothing to his body, but the fact that it was there, it helped him get away from the panic attacks. I thought that was funny.
that's all
